Land inequality and numeracy in Spain during the seventeenth and eighteenth century

We assess the relationship between land inequality and human capital at end of early modern period, focusing on individual-level evidence from Spain. Our main finding is that had already a significant negative effect formation there in late-seventeenth eighteenth centuries. argue this reflects important role social structure based farming families (as opposed to latifundia day laborers) development numeracy. This consistent with earlier studies, which argued households could (1) maintain relatively favourable nutritional standard as precondition for cognitive skills, (2) limit child labour (3) encourage numeracy due its demand by activities. results are robust, they include several control variables potential confounding variables.
